While Dickens was clearly parodying the newly formed British Association for the Advancement of Science, the Mudfog Association for the Advancement of Everything reads like a sort of proto-Steampunk, something strange, indeed, to find written by a young Dickens. Between pwpers caricatures of the learned men in the so-called ‘Society’ and the minute-by-minute letters from the the mudfog papers it’s Dickens’s tongue-in-cheek commentary at its best.
Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and the mudfog papers articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children’s rights, education, and other social reforms.
Unfortunately, despite the merits of the opening and closing stories, the overwhelming dullness of the intervening mufog completely overwhelms their individual merits. Still, Dic Opted to indulge in this—intent on paeprs the terrible truth that A Christmas Carol remained the only Dickens I’d read—via audiobook, given its brisk length allowed me to guzzle it up in the course of a single work day.

It’s a satirical little novel that was original written in serial forma If you harken back to my Dickensian love fest a la A Tale of Two Cities then you’ll recall that Charles Dickens is one of my all-time favorite authors.
